CFU-O is a small organization while Ukraine is a large and populous country. Whatever CFU-O perceives to be Ukraine's greatest needs at a given moment, we know we cannot satisfy those needs. Therefore we strive to maximize the impact of the limited resources we do have at our disposal. In 2010, at the beginning of the third decade of our existence, we see a need to shift emphasis from humanitarian to civil society oriented projects.
While these plans are still being developed and put into motion they may change in detail, a key project will be to supply information about Western political and economic norms to the Ukrainian public via the World Wide Web, supplemented by Western views of Ukraine's ongoing development. For example, we may publish articles about: The electoral systems of various countries, the degree to which western politicians enjoy legal immunity, language politics in multicultural countries like Canada, the allocation of powers in federal systems, regional autonomy, media ownership and concentration, and so on. All these are "hot button" issues in Ukraine, and topics on which the people and politicians of Ukraine may benefit from other examples. On another tack, we hope to develop a network of correspondents within Ukraine in order to develop feedback on these and other topics, and maybe launch ongoing blogs and forums on these subjects. We are looking for volunteers from knowledgable scholars to budding writers or translators who would like to participate in this effort. Material may be published in English, Ukrainian, and Russian. For this effort, we would like to have representation not just from Ottawa, but from other Western countries especially those with a Ukrainian diaspora, and from Ukraine itself. We anticipate a particular need for volunteers to translate into Russian, since the reality is that most of the settled diaspora speaks the local language of their country and secondarily Ukrainian, while the regions of Ukraine with the least access to Western thought are Russian speaking.
